Wild Rivers Ranger District, Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, Oregon/California [Map] National Forest Service

The river has 150 rapids, eleven of which are Class IV and one of which has a most difficult rating of Class V. Still, clear, blue-green pools offer contrast to the whitewater segments of the river and opportunities for catching anadromous fish, including large steelhead. Primitive camping and numerous hiking trails are available along the river corridor. Float permits are required and can be obtained at Ray's Market in Selma, Oregon. The Wild Rivers Ranger District contains portions of three unique Wilderness. The Kalmiopsis Wilderness, besides being a place of great botanical interest, is also one of the most unusual and complex geological areas of our country.

The Red Buttes Wilderness, straddling the border between Oregon and California, was named for the reddish-orange hue that a high content of iron and magnesium lends to the dramatic peridotite and serpentine formations of Red Buttes and adjacent Kangaroo Mountain.

Entirely in California, with only its northern tip inside the Wild Rivers Ranger District, the Siskiyou Wilderness is known for its great diversity of plant life, including one of the worlds largest concentrations of lily species . It is home to the rare Brewer's spruce and as many as 20 other species of coniferous trees.
